In novels, movies, or musicals, the desire for revenge is common. Sweeney Todd has a simple ideology; Sweeney is out to avenge the Judge for sending him away in an unjust jail while he took his daughter. Naturally, the story will have a surprise twist. Todd is a psychopath who murders by slitting throats of many people he has shaved. Then he gives the corpses to Mrs. Lovett, the meat pie seller who lives beneath him. Sweeney Todd kills the judge in the end. The judge is on his way to the staircase when he killed the homeless hag. He then almost kills his own daughter, but does not recognise her. After he has disposed of the corpse, he discovers that it is his own wife. Sweeney takes his own life because he is unable to bear the knowledge that he has killed his wife. The ending.

I still liked a couple of musical numbers. “No Place like London” was the first. The song begins with a major key that is very upbeat. Anthony Hope sings as he walks up to the stage. Hope is an optimistic, young man, who always looks on the brighter side. His naivety and youth are evident in his song. Todd interrupts, and then the song becomes darker. We learn that Todd is a dark person who sees everything bad. Hope saved Todd when he found himself stuck on a floating raft. This happens repeatedly throughout the play. Hope begins to make jokes about sex while Todd yells her out. The exchange a few last words, promising to meet up later. Then the two leave. The song was dark and summarised the whole musical. It was a dark song that summarized the whole musical. This song begins just after Todd’s suicide. The entire cast sings the large ballad. It is majestic but also creepy. You will get chills from the dissonance. The song is odd, but it’s catchy.

Sweeney Todd’s story was incredibly interesting, and it had a lot of dynamic. Sweeney may have been a murderer or crazy, but I still felt like I supported him throughout the story and was saddened that he had died. What I found interesting was that Mrs. Lovett’s last name and Anthony Hope’s were different. The Sailor had always been optimistic, and never questioned Sweeney. Todd saw him in a positive light, as he hoped to get his daughter returned and have the life that he once had. Also, the name of Mrs. Lovett sounds a lot like “love”. Sweeney’s character makes her fall for him. She does not tell him that Sweeney’s ex wife is the beggar despite knowing it. She loved him, which is why she died, Sweeney’s former wife also died, and Sweeney was killed. You could serve the meat pie cold and not warm as revenge.
