Formalism, which is a method that treats each work of artwork as an original work of work of artistic art, has intrinsic properties. Barrot & Sipacio, 2016, states that historical contexts, authors, and other contexts are irrelevant or not important for understanding the meaning. It focuses on the structure and tone of the story or text, as well as the style, imagery, tone, genre, and other formal aspects. The animated film “Grave of the Fireflies” is about two children living in Kobe after being made homeless by the bombs. It’s a sad story about the survival struggle of a teenage boy (Jun 2011, 2011).

Seita’s perspective is used to tell the story. Metaphors can be used to highlight the central theme or to explain the message the author wishes to convey. Setsuko is always greeted by fireflies when she feels helpless. This symbolises the light or lamp that gives hope in times of trouble. It is evident that Setsuko’s brother was asking her why fireflies die so quickly. It also shows how fragile life is, and the loss of their mother. The story also uses a simile. Setsuko can use the candy tin for emotional support. She will always get a little candy from Seita whenever she misses her mom. It is a testament to the transformation of Seita from a brother into an exemplary mother figure. It shows how Seita felt that there was still hope despite all the challenges she faced. Flashbacks are used to recall the pain of losing a loved one. Setsuko discovered the true story of her mom’s death, and Seita was unable to control his emotions. It shows that Seita, although emotionally fragile, is strong enough to meet many challenges and obstacles to help his sister survive. Setsuko’s demise was due to the war’s devastating effects and Seita’s prideful and selfish nature. Seita was reminded by his aunt to find a job, but he refused and fled the aunt’s house. When they ran out, the family began to steal fruit and eat frogs. Setsuko had diarrhea and malnutrition, but Setsuko tried everything he could to feed his sister. But it was too late. Seita expressed his brother’s gratitude and kindness by saying, “Seita. Thank you.” The final part of the film is so sad and heartbreaking because of what happened.
